What Is Positive Thinking?

The difference between “Positive Thinking” and a “Pep Talk” is desire, belief, self-reflection and action. You can go to a seminar on success training and be wowed by the program and like others in the audience become enthusiastic and leave the auditorium euphoric. What happens after you leave the venue?

The Secret

Do you start worrying about your obstacles again, or when you hit another speed bump go into a panic attack? That is a prime example of pessimistic behavior and why pep talks have short lived results. Becoming optimistic is crucial in attaining your goals and desires in life. An optimist will look for clues given by the presenters on how she can use her experience along with the valued information given at the event to replicate successful outcomes presently and in the future. You can gain valuable lessons from speakers at a seminar or from books- but until you reflect upon your life and apply the lessons on a consistent basis you may continue the cycle of past behavior. Your objective is to grow and change.

Concentrate on your successes; look for similar situations where you can apply the same strategies to replicate success. Understand errors in past actions don’t dwell upon them or exaggerate them until they become an obsession. This is the difference between a pep talk and positive thinking. Living your dream is both work and play, re-learning to use your mind to create the life you want is worth the effort! Become joyful living a life that you love.

“In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to     performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.”

–Robert Heinlein (Novelist)

From visualization of a definite and specific goal to a process, action steps of creating the goal in reality. Picture yourself having possession of your goal, feel it emotionally, hold it and taste it in the now (right brain). Use a Mind Map to create a definite written record of your vision, and then work on the process. This process can be charted using a time line bar chart, a Gantt chart. Construction managers must use a Gantt chart to organize all the coordinated sequences that make up the construction process. Successful people understand this process even if only intuitively. Having a written plan with a daily agenda is a must to overcome mental obstacles such as perfectionist thinking which can lead to becoming frozen.

In my practice as a coach I have my clients visualize what they want (goals) then work on process to achieve them. Reaching your full potential, your true and authentic self requires creating a life vision. Create a definite clear picture of who you want to be, and then live into that picture as if it were already true; picture it first then work on the process of making it a reality. This is the value of positive thinking.

Action steps:

  1. Create a Vision for yourself.
  2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.
  3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.
  4. Find mentors
  5. Do it now!
