Conversations

I wrote “Permission to Succeed – A New You 4 The New Year” for a specific purpose in mind, namely to bring about a greater awareness of “self” to you my readers. Since at present it’s not practical to sit down with you on the sofa in my living room and have a conversation my thoughts written in this book will convey ideas as a facsimile.

This is a “how to gain awareness” book. My hope is that you will be inspired and challenged by the ideas written in the book to think about your life, realize that you have the power within your mind to create a better life for yourself and then take action. While there are many great books on planning, time management, salesmanship, communication and books to inspire you to think “BIG” I found most of these were either too disorganized or too detail oriented to be a road map for creating your ultimate life of success.

The eight chapters were organized to break down the process of what successful people think and do to take their dreams from inception to actuality. By becoming aware of how we think and respond to other people, ideas and events in our life we can set new goals and work on new strategies to become more effective at directing our mind and living successfully. This book will help you to become aware of your strengths and weaknesses; how to direct your thoughts to help you find the answers within your own mind and create greater success in your life.

The Secret

In gaining greater self-awareness and using introspection you can be totally honest with yourself and deal with life coming from objective reality. Your present circumstances are primarily the result of your beliefs which created behavior resulting in the results that you have achieved at present. When you change beliefs causing a change in your behavior that will create different results.

You will be able to take the ideas in this book and use them as a road map to build harmonious relationships, gain wealth, success in business or any definite purpose that you have the desire to attain.

This blog is here for you to start a direct dialog with me to follow up after you have read Permission to Succeed.

Stop, Breath, Center, Observe

Self-awareness is crucial to our wellbeing, our happiness and reaching our goals in life. Our sense of self has the coding so to speak for “the map” we have in our head that tells us who we are and where we are in the world.

When you are having a crisis:

“Stop!

  • Don’t act or react.

  • Breath.

  • Center.

  • Observe:

What is the big picture?

Have I felt this way before?

What does this situation remind me of?

How was I feeling right before the event?

(I was tired, I was happy, I was already

upset, I was not paying attention.)”

Dr. Maxwell Maltz, MD, FICS

One of the first books on self-esteem that I read many years ago was “Psycho-cybernetics and Self-Fulfillment” by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, MD, FICS. I’ve lived and learned a lot since then. One of the problems that I have experienced, learned from and have overcome (although it’s a work in progress) is looking in the rear-view mirror. Dr. Maltz was right on regarding self-acceptance and forgiveness. We deserve to live joyously and courageously working towards our purpose in life!

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is crucial to our wellbeing, our happiness and reaching our goals in life. Our sense of self has the coding so to speak for “the map” we have in our head that tells us who we are and where we are in the world.

When a child is about two-years old he starts to be able to distinguish his needs from others, this self-consciousness or self-awareness that his identity is separate from others, and the ability to feel pride and shame.

As an example put a touch of rouse on a child’s cheek then hold up a mirror. If she touches the rouse on her own cheek, rather than the reflection in the mirror, then she has become aware that she’s the child in the mirror.

Our map (the imaginary one in our head) may no longer be serving our highest and true self. Our career, our relationships, our goals in life may be at an impasse due to our inattention or a self-image that is not what it should be. Because we have the power to choose, we can choose to change. We can create a new vision, a new map and chart our future in a different and more successful direction.

“Determine what’s in your best interests:

  • Is my thinking helping me to protect my life and health?

  • Will my thinking help me to achieve my short- and long-term goals?

  • Will my thinking best help me avoid my most undesirable conflicts with others?

  • Will my thinking help me feel emotionally the way I want to feel?”

Out Perform

Learning to outperform 98% of our fellows is a skill set which first begins in your mind. Everything is first created in the human mind then translates into the life of individuals as they act out their beliefs and values about themselves and how they see the world we all live in. The inner world of our mind translates to the outer world that we see and act upon. Is the glass half full or half empty?

Everything begins with an idea- this is the most important message that I can impart. Become an Optimist. The process of optimism is similar to that of pessimism only the fruits- the end result is opposite. Become an optimist in your thinking so when you awake each day you are glad to be alive, looking for opportunities – when acted upon will over time result in a life of success.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

–Albert Einstein

It is our imagination that allows us to see the possible and ask “What If?”

Visualize Your Future!

Use visualization to re-program your self-image and create a vision of positive self-expectancy. Make a Vision Board! Place pictures of yourself and your loved ones with things that you desire and goals that you want to accomplish in the present/ future.

A vision board can be a bulletin board made of cork with a frame around that you hang on the wall where it serves as a daily reminder. It can also be pictures placed on your computer’s desktop as a slide show.

Our personal map can be stuck on “present” in that we have become comfortable with our present circumstances we view it as what our life IS. This is an incomplete and fictitious picture of who we are and what we are capable of accomplishing in life. We can re-program our mind by changing our thoughts; reading inspirational books and informative books on topics we are interested. Next by setting goals with a longer term view in mind we can grow and change. Learning should be a lifelong process both in what we accomplish and in knowledge through study and observation.

Action steps:

1. Create a Vision for yourself.

2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.

3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.

4. Find mentors

Winners Visualize the Rewards of Success

Excerpt from Permission to Succeed

[In 1980] “The Soviet Union entered the Olympic tournament as heavy favorites, having won the ice hockey gold medal in 1956 and every year [from 1964 to 1976]. In the four Olympics after the Soviet squad was upset by team USA in the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Soviet teams had gone 27-1-1 and outscored the opposition 175-44. In head-to-head matchups against the United States, the cumulative score over that period was 28-7. The Soviet players were classed as amateurs, but soft jobs provided by the Leonid Brezhnev government (some were active-duty military) allowed them to essentially play professionally in a well- developed league with world class training facilities. They were led by legendary players in world ice hockey, such as Boris Mikhailov a top line ice hockey right winger and team captain, Vladislav Tretiak considered by many to be the best ice hockey goaltender in the world at the time, the speedy and skilled Valeri Kharlamov, as well as talented, young, and dynamic players such as defenseman Viacheslav Fetisov and forwards Vladimir Krutov and Sergei Makarov. From that team, Tretiak, Kharlamov, and Fetisov would eventually be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

[US Hockey Coach] Herb Brooks conducted tryouts in Colorado Springs in the summer of 1979. Of the 20 players who eventually made the final Olympic roster, Buzz Schneider was the only one from the 1976 Olympic team. Nine players had played under Herb Brooks at the Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s ice hockey program. Four more were from Boston Terriers men’s ice hockey at Boston University (Boston, Mass.) Assistant coach Craig Patrick had played with Brooks on the 1967 U.S. national team.”  -Wikipedia

Losers visualize the penalties of failure.

Winners visualize the rewards of success.

The Soviet team was clearly the favorite in any contest and their opponents were intimidated by the skill of the Soviet Team – the opposing team expected to lose and the Soviets expected to win, in most cases they were both right. Herb Brooks had a vision of how to defeat the Soviet team and designed a plan which included picking specific players who had the ability to beat the USSR’s Hockey Team at their own game. Team USA won the Gold Medal at Lake Placid, NY in the 1980 Winter Games, now known as the Miracle on Ice.

Abraham Maslow wrote in

The Further Reaches of Human Nature:

“Think of life as a process of choices, one right after another. At each point there is a progression choice and a regression choice. There may be movement towards defense, towards safety, towards being afraid; but over on the other side, there is a growth choice. To make the growth choice instead of the fear choice a dozen times a day is to move a dozen times a day towards self-actualization.”

University of Making Stuff Up:

Your life is not pre-determined- we make it up as we go along. To succeed: 1. Create a Vision 2. Live into that vision.
