Working in Pain

My Ordeal with Sciatica (continued)

As soon as I walked inside I tripped over my feet and fell face down my arms breaking my fall. The next day was Monday and a work day. I was still in pain and unable to ride either my mountain bike or the Honda so I took a cab to work. I phoned my primary care physician and made an appointment for later that day.

My expectation was that I would get some meds and go through the same process as five years prior, that I would get relief for the pain and my body would be back to normal in a month.

My doctor gave me a physical exam when he tested my reflexes the left knee responded normally but there was no movement in the right. He didn’t offer much of an opinion, he didn’t write me a prescription, and he wrote a referral to a Neurologist specialist. He left the examination room and when he didn’t return after a few minutes I went looking for him finding him in his private office. I was flabbergasted! I implored him for some meds- he wrote me a prescription for Lorazepam – I didn’t debate him, I just left the office and had the medication filled at my pharmacy.

Action steps:

1. Create a Vision for yourself.

2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.

3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.

4. Find mentors

Overcoming Adversity

My Ordeal with Sciatica

By Zak Klemmer

It started with squatting down then twisting my torso to the right as I stood up; a shooting pain in my right leg the rectus femoris muscle in a spasm and unable to stand completely upright. I went to a chiropractor expecting immediate relief to no avail. Next I drove myself to the hospital and waited in the emergency room to be seen. After what seemed to be an eternity I was seen by a doctor who prescribed Ibuprofen and two other drugs. During the next few days the muscles spasms diminished and I could stand erect again. I saw my primary care physician and he brought out a model of the lower back and explained how surgery could trim away part of the bulging disc- but then didn’t order either an MRI or any follow up on my condition. I continued with the drugs until the prescriptions ran out then continued taking Ibuprofen.

Frequently I would feel a pinch in my lower back and would have difficulty standing up. I was still taking Ibuprofen as this was the only remedy that seemed to work at least until I discovered a more permanent solution. I was 70 pounds overweight, at 5’-9” tall weighing 230 pounds. I went on the Zone Diet after seeing research author Barry Sears, PhD interviewed on television. It was a miracle as I had more energy than I could ever remember and my weight dropped off from 230 to 160. I kept a journal of everything that I ate or drank from July to November 1999. I looked better than I did in my twenties and could fit into clothes that have long since hung in my closet including my prized Bates leather jacket that I purchased at 21.

For family as well as professional reasons I moved back to Los Angeles and my new employer was only three miles from home, so I bought a 16 speed mountain bike and used it for commuting to and from the office.  My body fat percentage dropped again and I was in the best shape of my life. I felt so well that I stopped taking Ibuprofen. After about four days I experienced a sharp pain in my right hip. I was waiting to board a Southwest Airline flight at LAX.

After arriving in Tucson my wife and I went out to our favorite Japanese restaurant Mr. An’s after our meal upon arriving at my home in Tucson I experienced another severe muscle spasm due to sciatica. Here I was in severe pain on a Friday evening home with my wife for a weekend visit. Rather than going to the hospital I decided to start taking Ibuprofen at the dosage that had been prescribed by my doctor years before and wait until I returned to Los Angeles on Monday to receive treatment. This was a mistake.

On the flight to Los Angeles I thought how I was to get from LAX to my residence in Carson. I contemplated having my motorcycle towed home then taking a shuttle for my own conveyance. My Honda motorcycle was parked in a structure a block away from the airport, besides walking in pain lugging a suitcase there were two flights of stairs before I would be able to take an elevator to where my motorcycle was parked.  Then I had to ride it home knowing that if I lost traction I wouldn’t be able to lift the machine up and ride away again.

Upon arriving at the stairs I had to stop at each tread and lift my right leg up to the next higher step, a tedious and painful ordeal. I made it home without incident, now what?

This will be continued at a later post.

Action steps:

1. Create a Vision for yourself.

2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.

3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.

4. Find mentors

5. Do it now!

Take a Vacation!

When was the last time you took a vacation? Vacations are an effective way to relieve stress, recuperate both mentally and physically. Take a week-end vacation from your regular routine for introspection and do the following:

Sequester yourself in a quiet room where you won’t be distracted and ponder what motivates you, ask yourself:

What are my special talents?

What do I love?

Finding what you love and are passionate about is the first step in creating your life’s vision.

Tony Buzan of Palmers Green, Enfield, Middlesex, England coined the term “Mind Map” as he recognized the brain’s ability to learn and respond to patterns, color, pictures and associations. Drawing a mind map diagram uses the minds ability to tap into memory to unleash your creativity.

Let’s play a game of word association. Draw a circle in the center of the page, this represents the center of a tree when viewed looking down from the sky. This is your perfect self your personal acorn from which all your dynamic positive energy flows. Now draw free hand the branches growing out of the center – seven or more; attach one word at each branch that represents a goal, desire and reward that you want to attain.

You are using your right brain’s ability to visualize and accept in the now- having presently accomplished your goals.

Using the right half of your brain:

Visualization

Creation

Innovation

     This leads to:

Planning & Organizing

Problem solving

Faster than using linear thinking alone; drawing a diagram allows a free flow of ideas from your brain. This method is known as a Mind Map and will allow you to be more creative and efficient in communicating with colleagues in a meeting, giving a presentation, solving problems and selling your ideas to prospective clients and customers! Most important it will allow you to communicate with yourself and let your creativity flow from within to build the life of your VISION!

Left Brain Thinking Right Brain Thinking

Logic                                                      Visual

Order                                                     Color

Lists                                                       Creative

Time                                                       Without Time

Linear                                                     Intuition

Pieces                                                    Whole

Create a vision board with you as the center, draw freehand the branches growing out of the tree and cut out pictures representing all of your values, dreams and goals. Words can be used but not more than one word at each branch. Repeat more than once – unleash all of your creative thoughts and ideas.

Action steps:

1. Create a Vision for yourself.

2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.

3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.

4. Find mentors

5. Do it now!

Choose to Excel!

Expect a Gift

Let’s face it; most people don’t enjoy going to see the dentist. One of my good friends Mike Zakis gives a humorous speech about a sadistic dentist “Bernie the Butcher” – his speech is a laugh riot! I’ve had some insensitive, uncaring and indifferent dentists since childhood- but I have a dentist with whom I now look forward to seeing!

Her name is Michelle Romero-Chavez and her dental practice is Pusch Ridge Dental, PC in Oro Valley Arizona, which is located north west of Tucson. She is extraordinary because not only is she extremely competent – but she really cares about you- her patient. Her staff is wonderful and cheery just walking into her office is like visiting good friends. When you walk in you will be greeted by Elizabeth the receptionist or Michelle herself. Maggie the hygienist does excellent work and has the same caring attitude as her boss.

Art is a gift! The business culture of Michelle Romero-Chavez, DDS is not just a business transaction providing dental services to her patients. Michelle’s way of being when you are there is her gift to you. When I leave not only do I know that my dental health is being maintained – I feel like I’ve just received a magnificent gift from a friend.

Dr. Chavez is a role model for anyone who desires to make a difference in this life of ours. My blog is about finding a different way of seeing yourself, making better decisions – about seizing opportunity and creating a new life for yourself, a supercharged magnificent abundant life of kindness, joy, love and happiness.

Do It Now!

Take time for yourself away from other people, telephones, TV, radio and any distractions. Become completely detached from any negativity or pessimistic people. Find a place where you can relax and dream and plan. Use this time to start to re-program your mind, creating a new model – recreate yourself into your authentic and highest self.

NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK, ACT & SUCCEED

                      One cannot change the past

                      only your perception of

                      yourself, using emotional

                      distance and introspection

                      you can gain wisdom from

                      experience without the

                      blame and pain.

                      Now is the time to

                      grow and change on

                      your personal pathway

                      to Success.

There is a syndicated cartoon Andy Capp. Andy is a lay-about Englishman who avoids work and hangs out at the local pub. Picture him at the pub again, he tells his chum that he told Flo (his wife) that he’d “flip a coin to determine if he was going to look for work today.” His buddy said: “you won on the first flip, aye?” Andy’s response was something like: “It only took me 37 times today!”

The Secret

Are you really committed to creating a visionary life of success and happiness? Success is a process- every day of your life is part of this process from the day you are born until the exact time of your passing. Make a commitment to be great- then work at the process of creating within your- self that competent and confident person.

“They needed the money; this will turn a lion into a water buffalo quicker than anything else. I believe that working to pay bills is one of the most common causes in forgetting your dream. So many people are just too tired at the end of the day to work on or even think about their dream. Too bad. Turn off the damn TV! The TV will suck your dream right into the black hole of oblivion. Refuse to veg- unless of course your dream is to become a vegetable.”

–Bob Beaudine, The Power of Who

The 24 hour news cycle is filled with accidents, tragedy, crime, clichés, political propaganda, inaccuracies and war which cannot provide an environment of seeing the world as one of success. Yet the advertisers spend millions of dollars with media companies to promote their message with the expectation that a large enough percentage viewing will become buyers of their products and services. Don’t allow negativity in the world or negative thinking people to convince you that you won’t succeed. Balderdash! It’s all up to you- your thinking, dreaming, planning and acting. Cowboy Up and take responsibility for your life- do it now!

Remember what Arnold Schwarzenegger said about becoming a success:

“It’s the same process that I used in body building, what you do is create a vision of who you want to be and then live into that picture as if it were already true.”

Action steps:

1. Create a Vision for yourself.

2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.

3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.

4. Find mentors

5. Do it now!

The Way To Win At Life

How can you live fully without using introspection and discovering your inner authentic self?

“As for the Way:

It is what the mouth cannot speak of,

The eyes cannot see,

And the ears cannot hear.

It is that with which we cultivate the mind and align the body.

When people lose it they die;

When people gain it they flourish.

When endeavors lose it they fail;

When they gain it they succeed.

The Way never has a root or a trunk.

It never has leaves or flowers.

The myriad things are generated by it;

The myriad things are complimented by it.

We designate it ‘the Way’.”

–Inner Training, verse VI

Tao: Inward Training

Thoughts are things- very powerful things which cause behavior patterns setting up events in your life. So if you are unsatisfied with the results that you are getting in relationships, in business, financially then direct your thoughts and re-program your mind.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” –Albert Einstein

What is it that you really want? You must be specific about this. Using visualization, that’s why creating a vision board is so important, will assist to re-program your sub-conscious mind.

It could be to win Toastmaster’s World Championship of Public Speaking. That would be a specific goal and grand enough to develop one’s speaking skills to its fullest, and then develope them even further. Using your imagination will attract the right people to your cause; it will motivate you to go beyond your present limits.

Working at becoming a World Class Speaker is specific so how would one go about raising their personal level of performance? The first would be to video tape your speeches in front of a live audience, and then view your self in action. Second attend other Toastmasters clubs and see the best in your area perform, how do you presently compare? Then enter you club’s speech contest and compete at the first level. Are you the best speaker in your club?

By developing your craft as a speaker is the first step to become the World Champion. To become great you must develop everything including the “content” of your speech. Every speaker has content, but content alone will not win contests. Using your body, voice and becoming an actor on the podium is what makes a great speaker, one capable of winning the top prize. I have a mentor at the club level, namely Mr. Randy Lindsey at Conquistador Toastmasters Club #5858. After I had become competent enough to speak without notes and confident enough to speak with out a lectern something magical happened; I became an actor and performed my message!

You have created a vision of yourself receiving the World Championship of Public Speaking from Toastmasters International. See yourself being handed the trophy at the convention! Visualize and feel yourself reliving your best performance! Now work out all the steps at improving your performance to attain this lofty and mighty goal. Find a mentor locally that you admire and has mastered public speaking. Attend a workshop at a speaking school or retreat taught by a world class professional speaker. As Sen. Lamar Alexander said: “Aim for the top, there’s more room up there!”

I have been working with coursework provided by Doug Stevenson and highly recommend his insight, his website is:

I’ll see you on the podium!

Create Your Solutions

Familiarity is the strongest human instinct. What parents don’t understand about their child’s adolescence is that in the process of maturation to become a full functioning adult one must become an adult. Not only is going through puberty, which is mainly biological, but to become separate from his/her parents an individual adult with their own identity.

One of the speed bumps in growing and changing is resistance. Familiarity is such a strong instinct that it can hold an individual back from becoming all that they are capable of becoming. We can break down this process of keeping things familiar the first is generalization. We can take a situation, an experience, or an idea that an individual has had then he generalizes it and in his mind applies it to all situations- he limits his capabilities.

The English language is very complex with sound alike words with entirely different meanings; there are synonyms, antonyms and homonyms. And the spellings deviate from the phonic sounds. When I was in first grade the method of instruction was that of sight reading. The teacher would hold up a card with one word printed on it and say the word. We may have reviewed the alphabet but we were not taught the sounds of each letter hard and soft. This was confusing to me and when I compared myself to other pupils that were better readers I became frustrated because my motivation was learning to read. Then the teacher was inept on the psychology of young children putting me through several diagnostic tests because of this I assumed that there was something wrong with me. This created a map in my mind of who I was and what I was capable of – I generalized this experience and applied it to my intelligence! Yet several years later I finally was able to decode the printed word and became an excellent reader above my grade level in elementary school.

Deletion is when we focus on certain aspects of our experience at the expense of others. We put all of our attention at a problem and worry about the negative consequences rather than putting our mind’s attention and energy to solutions. We become the problem instead of creating a solution. Poor people see their problems as life; rich people see themselves as bigger than their problems and seek solutions.

Distortion is where we shift the meanings of things. My son Bradford is a Fine Art Photographer. He takes digital photographs then layers multiple images and distorts the image to create something new. Pessimists and optimists shift the meanings of their experiences in life to its opposite. Generalization, deletion and distortion work together in our mind to create a map of the world and our place in it. We can unshackle the chains of our self-imposed limitations and create an abundant life by understanding, thinking and changing our beliefs about ourselves.

“We must look for the opportunity in every difficulty instead of becoming paralyzed at the thought of difficulty in every opportunity.”     –Walter E. Cole

Control – Alt – Delete

Windows users are familiar with the function of hitting these three keys. Virginia Stair, a family therapist wrote that keeping things familiar is the strongest instinct of human beings. We want to change our life for the better but for many people leaving our zone of familiar surroundings and self-image is confusing and for some fearful. We make mental “maps” of how the world works and then place our self in the world; for successful people like Walt Disney, Art Linkletter, Dr. Kevin Leman and others it functions very well. When it stops serving our best interests it’s time for a tune up.

Our personal map can be stuck on “present” in that we have become comfortable with our present circumstances we view it as what our life IS. This is an incomplete and fictitious picture of who we are and what we are capable of accomplishing in life. We can re-program our mind by changing our thoughts; reading inspirational books and informative books on topics we are interested. Next by setting goals with a longer term view in mind we can grow and change. Learning should be a lifelong process both in what we accomplish and through study.

Path

I strongly believe in the use of Mind Maps as a tool to pull out your ideas using word association and allowing your mind to respond.

Human beings generalize by applying a general rule or circumstance to our life in total. We delete thoughts and events that don’t fit into our subjective reality and distort reality to make it fit into our mental map of our world. Control our thoughts, create an Alternate course then Delete dysfunctional relationships.

I was in my 20’s and managed a ware house for Products Research Chemical, Inc. in Glendale, California. One day I needed some temporary help so we called Manpower to send a man over to help with counting and tracking of our inventory. As I watched him work I noticed that he was probably a natural left-handed person. Later in the day I saw a hand written note and that he used his right hand to scribble his message, not only that but the hand writing was atrocious it looked like he had arthritis- the writing was nearly illegible. I commented to him that I thought he was left-handed because it looked to me that his left hand was dominant. When I mentioned that his writing was illegible he told me a story. When he was a boy in grade school teachers forced the left handed students to write with their right hands!

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else- this is the greatest accomplishment.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

Belief becomes behavior which creates events and relationships that turn into results. By changing our beliefs, and modifying our behavior which in turn set up new relationships and different events which then become positive results leading to self-actualization. What can I create today that empowers myself to make my life’s vision into reality?

We are the author of our own life and we have the power to make choices every day eliminating fear and limitation and create our own vision just like Arnold Schwarzenegger, to create the life of our desire.

Life Is A Gift

My name is Alex Zakutansky; I was born in 1883 in Cigelka Slovakia and immigrated to America in 1903. I am now near the end of my days- it’s 1965.

I came to America looking for a better life and found what I was searching for, making my way in the world. Arriving with little money and no English skills I used my wits and dreams to propel myself forward and upward.

I married my sweetheart Ana Guzzie in Pittsburgh in 1907; unable to support my young family sent my bride back to the old country to stay with her family until I was able to support them, my first son John was born there in 1908. Finally in 1914 having the money sent for my wife and son to join me in Gary, Indiana.

I started working at the Gary steel mill in 1910. Being an enterprising young man looking toward my future I bought two unimproved lots on Lincoln Street in Gary. I started to build houses to rent out. My young family lived in the basement of the first. The years passed and the good Lord blessed us with another son, George and then a daughter, Ann.

I continued my building plan until I built an apartment building at Fillmore Street and 5th Avenue in Gary. After many years I was able to retire and live off the rents. We later moved the family to southern California where I invested in another apartment building in Sherman Oaks, California. Before I pass away and my body turns to dust I wanted to pass on the wisdom that I have gained in my brief lifetime.

Life is a gift and therefore you should always present yourself to the world as if you are a “gift”. You are unique – no one whom has ever lived is just like you. You are human so even though you share many characteristics of your fellows use your imagination to stand out from the common man and woman to ascend to greatness in both large and small things. Your imagination should be developed and your ideas should be acted upon, this will give your life meaning in the deepest sense of the word. Let not others discourage or disparage you from striving for your dream as they live in limitation and may not be ready for your message and level of understanding.

There is a river- a great river of consciousness in the cosmic that you can tap into with your mind’s intuition. Learn how to use this power, listen closely and act upon its message. Trust yourself and act as Intuition is the most powerful part of YOU.

Do not accept limitation or allow others to place limits on your worth or put you in a box. Our creator gave us a wonderful computer, our human mind – this is very powerful and with it you can become uncommon and live an extraordinary life, use your imagination to truly live fully.

Live a life of love- that is to say build a career doing what you love. This is where you get powerful energy from. Your love will attract others to your cause and your collaboration with others will make your dreams become a reality.

Always be honest with yourself, integrity is a gift that you give yourself. It is your intrinsic worth that cannot be purchased with money. Your honesty will be the foundation on which to build a life worthy of your soul and mind. Your intuition, knowledge and actions will make your life successful – an extraordinary life that will give you the satisfaction that your life was worth living.

Action steps:

1. Create a Vision for yourself.

2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.

3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.

4. Find mentors

5. Do it now!

What Is Positive Thinking?

The difference between “Positive Thinking” and a “Pep Talk” is desire, belief, self-reflection and action. You can go to a seminar on success training and be wowed by the program and like others in the audience become enthusiastic and leave the auditorium euphoric. What happens after you leave the venue?

The Secret

Do you start worrying about your obstacles again, or when you hit another speed bump go into a panic attack? That is a prime example of pessimistic behavior and why pep talks have short lived results. Becoming optimistic is crucial in attaining your goals and desires in life. An optimist will look for clues given by the presenters on how she can use her experience along with the valued information given at the event to replicate successful outcomes presently and in the future. You can gain valuable lessons from speakers at a seminar or from books- but until you reflect upon your life and apply the lessons on a consistent basis you may continue the cycle of past behavior. Your objective is to grow and change.

Concentrate on your successes; look for similar situations where you can apply the same strategies to replicate success. Understand errors in past actions don’t dwell upon them or exaggerate them until they become an obsession. This is the difference between a pep talk and positive thinking. Living your dream is both work and play, re-learning to use your mind to create the life you want is worth the effort! Become joyful living a life that you love.

“In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to     performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.”

–Robert Heinlein (Novelist)

From visualization of a definite and specific goal to a process, action steps of creating the goal in reality. Picture yourself having possession of your goal, feel it emotionally, hold it and taste it in the now (right brain). Use a Mind Map to create a definite written record of your vision, and then work on the process. This process can be charted using a time line bar chart, a Gantt chart. Construction managers must use a Gantt chart to organize all the coordinated sequences that make up the construction process. Successful people understand this process even if only intuitively. Having a written plan with a daily agenda is a must to overcome mental obstacles such as perfectionist thinking which can lead to becoming frozen.

In my practice as a coach I have my clients visualize what they want (goals) then work on process to achieve them. Reaching your full potential, your true and authentic self requires creating a life vision. Create a definite clear picture of who you want to be, and then live into that picture as if it were already true; picture it first then work on the process of making it a reality. This is the value of positive thinking.

Action steps:

  1. Create a Vision for yourself.
  2. Write a plan of action, prioritize.
  3. Live the plan as if you have become your vision.
  4. Find mentors
  5. Do it now!
